Blade Runner, a dystopian science fiction thriller, was released in 1982 and nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration). The film was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Sean Young. Blade Runner was set in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019 and features genetically engineered robots called Replicants, created for dangerous and menial work in “off-world colonies”. These manufactured beings were banned from Earth after a vicious mutiny and are monitored by blade runners, specialist forces who hunt and “retire” Replicants if they return to Earth. Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, reluctantly accepts one more assignment as a blade runner to hunt a particularly cunning group of escaped Replicants.
The much anticipated sequel, Blade Runner 2049, will be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario), and stars Ryan Gosling (Drive, Blue Valentine), Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, and Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Deckard. The film is set to be released on October 6, 2017.
