A trailer for Spike TV’s Heath Ledger documentary was released yesterday in honor of the late actor’s birthday. Ledger, who died from an accidental mixture of prescription drugs in 2008, would have turned 38 years.

The doc I Am Heath Ledger includes interviews with his family, friends and colleagues.

“Before Brokeback Mountain came out, it would’ve been unthinkable to have a romantic tragedy involving two gay cowboys,” said Ben Mendelsohn. “This is one of the biggest heartthrobs on earth taking on that character. That’s an artist.”

Director Ang Lee added, “Even as a supporting actor, he’ll steal the whole show. That’s Heath Ledger.”

The trailer also features never-before-seen footage of the Dark Knight star — much of which was shot by Ledger himself, as he always wanted to pursue directing. But filmmaker Matt Amato said, “He wanted fame — and then when he got it, he didn’t want it.”

I Am Heath Ledger airs May 17 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Spike TV. It will also makes its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23, and screen in select theaters beginning May 3.
