VANCOUVER — Atomic Cartoons has teamed up with legendary animator Marv Newland to present an evening of animation, as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival’s (VIFF) Canadian Images series. On October 8, Atomic Cartoons will present “Kooks & Legends: Animated Motion Pictures” curated by Marv Newland at 6:15 p.m. at the Rio Theatre.

The screening will feature a broad range of animation, ranging from Academy Award nominees to film school graduation films, including Richard Condie’s 1985 film, The Big Snit, and last year’s Menagerie from Julian Gallese. According to VIFF’s film guide the screening “encompasses as many mood swings, stylistic shifts, rare delights and unexpected treats as can be jammed into an hour and a half.” Marv will provide the audience with a short introduction to each film, explain his selection and offer some context. Tickets are available now at www.viff.org

Marv Newland is an animation director, and founder of International Rocketship, whose films include Bambi Meets GodzillaAnijamBlack HulaPostalolio and CMYK. His animation has been screened in festivals all over the world and has won prizes including the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France.

“It’s been a lot of fun to curate this screening,” Newland says. “VIFF and Atomic gave me a clean slate to create an evening that includes a few animation classics — both new and old.”

“We’re delighted to be able to present ‘Kooks & Legends’” says Atomic Cartoons president Trevor Bentley. “We’re doing this to underline how important animation is both as an art and an industry driver in Vancouver and B.C.”

Atomic Cartoons is a full service animation company with studios in Vancouver and Kelowna. The winner of two Canadian Screen Awards in 2015, Atomic creates and produces original properties such as Atomic Betty and Pirate Express, as well as productions like Little Charmers and Rocket Monkeys. Atomic was recently acquired by Vancouver-based Thunderbird Films, an international producer and distributor of television and film content. The Thunderbird Group of Companies also includes Vancouver’s Great Pacific TV and Reunion Pictures as well as London-based theatrical distributor Soda Pictures.
